Cleaners for JewelleryIf your jewellery is dirty and it needs to be cleaned, there are many home remedies and professional grade cleaners that make it easy to do the job on your own. But before you clean any valuable metal or stone you should take the time to talk to your jeweller, or at least consult the internet to see what type of cleaners will work best on your jewels. Occasionally, household products work well. For example, when cleaning a dusty or smudged diamond, all you have to do is place the ring, earrings or necklace in a sink with hot water for a few moments. Then drop the item(s) into a small cup or glass filled with glass cleaner and let it soak for about ten minutes. If the ring is particularly dirty, it might be necessary to scrub it with an old toothbrush. Afterwards, remember to throw the brush away. Home remedies such as these do a fine job cleaning non-porous gems like diamonds and sapphires. But when it comes to precious metals, you will have to visit your jeweller and purchase non-abrasive jewellery cleaner. These cleaners work well on gold, platinum and certain gemstones. They cannot, however, be used to clean pearls or porous gems like rubies, emeralds or coral. And for silver you will need a non-abrasive silver polish. Unfortunately, it is possible to stain or even ruin a piece of jewellery when you use the wrong cleaner. So, whenever you have a question about cleaning any piece of jewellery, make sure you consult your jeweler first. |
